 My 1998 Ranger
|
 |
This is my daily driver. I acquired this truck upon the unfortunate demise of my previous
truck, a 1992 Ranger. It's sole purpose and function is to get me around, from home to work and on all
the road trips I end up taking. It's also my mule for carrying around parts for my other truck, and
anything else I need. Because of this, I determined that I could not allow myself to muck around under
the hood (well, unless absolutely necessary that is) .The idea is that this is what I drive while
everything else is "under construction". |
| I did replace the factory airbox with a 9" Conical K&N air filter and MAF adapter, and I also
replaced the "Ford" Logo on the tailgate with a "Lumi Logo" that lights up at night. Also, since this is
the instrument panel I look at every day, I treated myself to NRAuto's white face gauge kit. Oh yeah,
one other thing; I used this truck as a wrapper for my competition-winning sound system. (hehe) |

  The stereo... |
This is the stereo this truck inherited from the aforementioned 92 Ranger, and in a nutshell
it consists of:
- 2 HiFonics Olympian OW108 10" subwoofers
- 1 G&S Predator Pre525 component kit
- 1 Annhilator HA400C 400 watt amplifier
- 1 HiFonics Cupid 22x2 amplifier
- Pioneer DEH-725 CD player
- Pioneer DEQ-7600 Equalizer
- Pioneer P-600 6 disc changer
|
All in the confines of a regular cab truck without losing any mobility of the seats! |
 |
Of course, an installation of this scale doesn't come without some modifications to the truck. To get both DIN
units in Ford's odd size opening, I used a Dremel to remove about 1/8" of material from the top and bottom of
the opening. I then fabricated a mounting system for the units, which were bolted together, that holds them
steady in the dash. |
| I also had to remove the factory rear speakers in order to accomodate the custom subwoofer enclosure. This
one was permanent, because the mounts had to go, too. The doors got custom baffles that allowed the
installation of both the 5.25" mid and the 1" tweet in the factory 5x7/6x8 hole.

| The Hifonics Cupid is mounted underneath the Passenger's seat and powers the component kit, and
the Annhilator HA400C is mounted between the subwoofers in the enclosure and is bridged mono to the 8 ohm
subs, which are wired in paralell. This draws the maximum wattage out of the amp without danger of overheating.
The P-600 is mounted on custom brackets to the seat tracks underneath the driver's seat, allowing me to
change cartridges on the fly.
This system, in the 92 (a smaller truck) with a Kenwood 4042a Equalizer instead of the Pioneer, hit 138.4
decibels in competition. I have not yet competed with it in this truck, but I'm confident it's louder. |
